The importance of organic coffee to many people is on the up. This is for the simple reason that is offers a greener solution to the growing of coffee. These organic coffee plantations are different from regular plantations in that they are grown with many fruit and nut trees scattered around. There are several reasons for this. Organic coffee is largely a family owned enterprise, in that it is largely grown by families on small farms rather than larger companies. These smaller farms benefit from having additional crops in the fruit and nut trees around the plantations. They also charge a higher premium per pound of about 15 cents than conventional coffee farmers, reflecting the greater labour requirements of growing the coffee.
The growth of this coffee is not largely an enterprise pursued by large company plantations, but by small family farms. This is one of the factors that allows these beans to see a greater level of care. The additional labour put in my these farmers means that they see higher prices for their product. This averages at roughly 15 cents per pound.
Additionally, the trees act to conserve water, whilst the resident birds help to keep the fields clear of pests and insects. The beans grown in this way tend to also mature more slowly, giving them a superior taste in many people views.
